Stakeholders and Benevolent Capital, founded by Brett Johnson, have made a major new signing for the Rhode Island FC soccer club. Johnson serves as Chairman for Rhode Island FC, which competes in the USL Championship league, the second tier of American pro soccer.
Rhode Island FC joined the USL Championship in 2021 during a period of expansion for the league. Under Johnson’s leadership, the club has ambitious goals to become a top franchise in its market. The new player signing demonstrates the commitment of Benevolent Capital to support Rhode Island FC in its growth. This young and talented acquisition has the potential to make an immediate impact on the pitch.
Benevolent Capital , the majority owner of Rhode Island FC, announced the signing of 27-year-old midfielder Kofi Twumasi. Twumasi joins the club from Rot-Weiß Oberhausen in Germany’s Regionalliga West, the fourth division of German football. Prior to playing in Germany, Twumasi spent time with Atlanta United 2 in the USL Championship and VfB Homberg in the Regionalliga West. The Ghanaian midfielder first moved to Germany in 2019 after standout performances for the Right to Dream Academy and Liberty Professionals FC in the Ghana Premier League.
Twumasi is in the prime of his career. He will look to make an immediate impact for Rhode Island FC as they push for the playoffs this season. Twumasi has the versatility to play centrally or out wide, and should provide additional creativity to Rhode Island’s midfield.
In 2019, Twumasi secured a transfer to Atlanta United 2 in the USL Championship. He immediately became a starter for Atlanta’s reserve side, making 32 appearances in his first season. Over his two years with Atlanta United 2, the Ghanaian midfielder continued to impress and drew interest from clubs across North America.
Now at the age of 27, Twumasi embarks on the next chapter of his career with Rhode Island FC. After honing his skills in Germany and proving himself in the USL Championship, he comes to Rhode Island as an experienced and well-rounded central midfielder ready to anchor the team’s spine.
Chairman Brett Johnson expressed great enthusiasm for the signing of Kofi Twumasi, calling it a “tremendous addition” to the Rhode Island FC roster. Johnson was drawn to Twumasi’s versatility in the midfield, ability to control possession, and knack for chance creation. He sees Twumasi slotting into an attacking midfield role, where he can pull the strings going forward.
Twumasi’s versatility in the midfield will give the coaching staff multiple options for where to align him. His quickness and passing ability could unlock Rhode Island’s attack in ways it has struggled in past seasons. Defensively, Twumasi has shown he can contribute as well, using his speed to close down opponents.
If Twumasi lives up to expectations, he could elevate Rhode Island FC to greater relevance nationally. For a club still seeking its first major trophy, optimism abounds thanks to this promising new signing. The future looks bright at Rhode Island FC.
